Apocalipstick and Bad Wolf: Underground Rock Princesses
Last night I saw a great show at underground LA music venue, Amplyfi! A friend of mine, Abby Lipstick, is in an explosive all-girl punk band, Apocalipstick! They played last night and they totally rocked! Apocalipstick is not your average, run-of-the-mill girl band. With biting, in-your-face lyrics, catchy riffs and melodies that make you wanna dance (and fight!), plus sassy high-energy stage presence, these girls are a force to be reckoned with! On top of that, each member has their own individualized style, that is somehow adorable, while at the same time completely hardcore (just like their music!). These girls are so rock n roll.
Apocalipstick’s set last night included songs about unrequited love, playing the field, telling off the girl band haters, and even a cover of the Powerpuff Girls theme song!

After Apocalipstick’s set, the next group of musicians to take the stage was Bad Wolf. This was my first opportunity to hear them, and I was very blown away! Bad Wolf is Amplyfi’s owner, Kota Wade’s band. Their sound is reminiscent of Paramore, with a slight trance edge. Kota is a very talented vocalist, ranging from an all-out rock belt, to a light, ethereal, almost operatic sound! (Think a cross between Hayley Williams and Sierra Casady from CocoRosie)
The band’s name, “Bad Wolf” comes from popular sci-fi British television show, Doctor Who. As this might indicate, the band and their music are anything but ordinary and they certainly aren’t afraid of the unconventional. Their set opened with an eerie, melodic cover of Once Upon a Dream, in the style of a fairytale rock-ballad! The rest of the set was full of powerful rock, moving vocals, whimsical synth tracks and some otherworldly magic element. They definitely transcend time and space with their unique sound, and seamless blending of genres. This band is going places.
The venue itself, added great atmosphere to the evening. Amplyfi is the perfect spot to enjoy some indie music!
"AMPLYFi has often been compared to the legendary 60's club "The Cavern" where the Beatles started because of its cool underground vibe: small (60-70 capacity), hard to find (no sign, no address, the front door is literally in a back alley, which everyone really digs), great atmosphere, and is owned by a 20-yr-old female singer/musician"

Bad Wolf will be back at Amplyfi next month! Apocalipstick will be playing at the OC Fair on August 12th!
